Your best bet would be to take your coin to a local coin dealer. They will be able to tell you more by evaluating the condition of the coin. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

You can also post pictures on this website (there are many coin experts here that can help you evaluate it - there also may be people willing to buy if you are trying to sell):

If you know it is in mint state (uncirculated) then you must have look for a mint mark and found none.In case you did not it is on the eagle side at the bottom below the wreath. In the lower mint state grade of MS-60 its value is around $28, in MS-63 $35 and in MS-64 $47. These values are about what a dealer will pay for those grades. The date is not scarce nor is the grade. Most dollar coins minted at the Philadelphia mint did not see much circulation. If they stayed in the east they were kept at the mint or in a bank's vault to back their paper money. Only if it went out west was it used and maybe spent on a bottle of Red Eye whiskey.

To be graded mint state your coin must have no trace of ware and must have most of it's mint luster still present. The year 1889 had a mintage of 21,726,000 and one graded mint state would have the value of $35.00.I hope this information helps answer your question.
