The "better" processor is a difficult question to answer without more details. I'd recommend checking this Tom's Hardware link and selecting an application from the list to see how the chips worked against that application. You won't find that a single vendor completely out performs the other unless you have a narrow criteria set.

Intel, in my opinion, is the far more advanced processor in its infrastructure, cooling systems, and speed. However, they tend to be fairly expensive, and so a crappy 64mb graphics card is often put in place of a higher-end one to compensate for the cost. Most gamers and graphics designers prefer Intel over AMD, but; if they have an eye for lower prices for a moderate-running processor, they should choose AMD's lineup. AMD's are not as fast as Intel's are, but are not as expensive, therefore a much better graphics card (say 128mb - 512mb) are often packaged from $500 (in a certain Acer brand computer), to $2000, where as Intels can get far up into the $7000 range in their best. Both are basically the only good choices for processors, anything else isn't all that great.

Tom is right in my opinion (although I currently have an Intel processor), AMD was shown to run faster than the same speed Intel processor.

Of course, the other thing to consider is the MB, I see a lot of people spend a lot of money on the processor, then try to save a buck or two by buying a cheap MB and off brand RAM.

I prefer AMD. Past comparison have show the AMD to greatly our-perform Intel.

It depends on how much you want to spend. Generally when comparing same speed processors AMD will perform faster. Intel makes some very good high end CPU's, but you can spends many hundreds of dollars on them.

Either way I would suggest going for no less than a dual core.

Intel is the dominate processor. The core 2 duo has a bigger cache for more speed, and runs at a faster clock speed for more speed. AMD has nothing on Intel. The quad cores kill anything!!!! Any Intel is a good buy!!!

tom was partly right. in PAST comparison amd was the winner. right now intel's core2duo line are the top processors. they easily beat an evenly matched amd, run very cool, use low power, and are very overclockable. you can get the lowest c2d, and run it at speeds that the higher c2d's come stock at with just some good air cooling.
