And what foods contain those? (for those of us who cannot take pre-natal vitamins...)

Other than folic acid and extra iron, there is no proof that any other specific vitamins are needed outside of a normal, healthy diet. The recommendations for folic acid are high, so I would take a supplement for that. Cooking food destroys folate, so you'd have to have everything raw. For iron, meat has higher iron than anything else. Cook all your stuff in a cast iron pan (no non-stick!).

Follow Dr. Brewer's diet and you should do just fine. I can't get my google search to work, but just look up Brewer Diet. Dr. Brewer passed away a few years ago, but he specialized in reducing the incidence of pre-eclampsia (hypertension) in pregnancy through diet.

If you can't take pre-natals due to difficulty keeping them down, the next best thing is to take Flintstones vitamins. Take 2 instead of 1 considering you're an adult - one in the morning and one before bed. They contain all the same ingredients as prenatals but are gentler on your stomach.

The first few weeks you need folic acid to prevent neuro-tube defects such as spinabifida. That you should be taking before you try to get pregnant, because it's the first 6 weeks of pregnancy that you need it the most. The pills are very small and easy to take of you are having trouble keeping prenatals down. Folic acid is found in leafy green vegetables.

It's really best to keep prenatals down anyway you can. I threw up everyday for the first 13 weeks with my first pregnancy and just about that now with the current pregnancy, but I force myself to take them and keep them down for my child's sake.

You would do good to eat a fortified cereal every morning. I LOVE Multi-grain cheerios. They can be pricey, but depending on what state you live in, WIC can help you get healthy food you need now. It would be a good idea to visit them anyway, for nutrition counseling and free food coupons.
