Absolutely. It takes serious athletic ability to perform at the level that pro wrestlers perform day in and day out. Some are more athletic than others, and some may be on steroids, but all are athletes at some level.

oh hell yeah, Cena, the Rock, and Goldberg played football (goldberg played in the NFL even) Kevin Nash played basketball, it takes a lot of athletic ability to be able to do what they do
there was an article in ESPN magazine a number of years ago about it, and the end of it went something like this; "is professional wrestling a sport? dont be silly, are pro wrestlers athletes? say no at your own risk"

Definition of athlete in American Heritage:
A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

By that definition, I'd say yes. They must possess all those traits in order to perform their routines. Hopefully they acquire them naturally, instead of with a pill.

The competitive aspect may be a bit tricky, since the competition is completely staged and the winner predecided.

All of you who say no, I'd like you to get off you lazy ***, put down the lays potato chips, and go outside. Knock some idiot in the back of the head and slap the figure four on him, ask him if it hurts. Then if you're able, perform a sit-down power bomb, ask if him if that hurts.
Wrestling may be scripted but it's not fake.

Most Wresters are former athletes, but their sport is not competetive(at least not the matches because they are planned out) So this makes them athletic but not athletes. They might be more athletic then Phil Mickleson, but in phils sport you compete to win.
