A good first car is one that you can drive. By that, can you drive a stick? Most people start off with an automatic but I would recommend getting a stick at first. It's not hard to learn. If you know of someone that has a stick, ask them to let you try, by yourself, in a parking lot (without other cars) or a field so you can get the hang of it.
The car should be small enough that you can feel comfortable driving it. After all, you're not going to buy a Hummer are you? Of course not.
It should be in good condition with no mechanical problems. You might ask a family member to recommend a mechanic that would look at the car before you buy it.
Also consider if you're buying the car from an individual or a company. Either way, have the car checked by a qualified mechanic.
Then you'll have to consider what it will cost to maintain the car. Gas, oil, maintenence, tires. Don't forget insurance! Most States now require insurance.
My first was a red 1976 Pontiac Ventura. 4 door, 6 cylinder. I drove it forever. My mom bought it for me when I turned 18, from a local doctor.
The first car I bought myself (I traded the Ventura and got $500) was a red 1986 Chevrolet Chevette. It cost $8000. LOL! 5-speed manual transmission. I was somewhat pushed into buying it, I was too excited to realize "you dummy, you can't drive a stick".
My uncle drove it home for me, got out and put me in the driver's seat and said "Learn". I taught myself the basics in 4 hours. After about 4 months I was really comfortable shifting.
Good luck!

I think the best first car is a mazda 3. They have great crash ratings as well as good gas milage. you can probably find one for under 15 grand. Here are some of the features that might persuade you to look into a Mazda 3; Electroniuc brake assist, side impact air bags, stability control, 4 wheel disc brakes, advanced air bags, electronic brake distribution, electronic steering assist, award winning engine, abs, tracton control system.
These are just a few options that in my opinion fits the needs of a first vehicle.
My first car was a 1988 oldsmobile cutless ceirra. I wouldn't reccomend that for a first car.
Whatever you do choose just put safety and reliability before price. We can't put a price oin our health.
Buy GAP coverage.

A good first car is a cheap car because you are going to wreck it. Even if you don't wreck it, you will scratch it or break it in some way learning to drive properly. Get a car that won't break your heart or budget if you manage to destroy it. My first car was a 1966 mustang, and after I ran it into the ground I sold it to my brother :-)

A good first car is a piece of crap. You learn to appreciate it, also it is best that you buy it yourself and especially if it gets you from point A to point B, and back to point A. Also if you get a fender-bender no big deal.
My first car was a nasty 1979 Ford Mustang, this was in 2000.
I hated it, it had vinyl seats which burns you butt in the summer. The vinyl was sunscorced and had a terrible smell that filled the car when it rained.
It blew all of its hoses and I had to replace the starter twice. I replaced virtually every removable part in that car in just 2 yrs, (with the exception of the interior).
You learn to appreciate the better cars that you get and you can practice your driving in the crap one.

I would say a good first car would be a Saturn. It does the job and it gets you from point A to point B as long as you get regular maintenance. My good first car would have to be the 2008 Dodge Avenger. It is a great car for a great price.

hey cheer girl! whatever you get and you got some good answers, don't get a sports car! your insurance will be sky high and you will hate the car in 6 months. trust me. don't pay a lot for your first car. that way, you will have some money for repairs and you are going to need little things here and there.
good luck.

my first car was a 1991 Plymouth Acclaim, that I paid $800 for. It ran good, was clean, and lasted awhile. A good first car is one that is good mechanically wise, clean, and reasonably priced, like say between $500-2000...or more depending on what you are buying, and your age, and financial status.
