You could, but it would be easier to make one of heavier plexiglass. A glass canopy, if you've never seen one befoe, is two pieces of glass hinged lengthwise with a plastic hinge, with a bach section made of plastic that can be cut to fit around power cords, filters, etc. with a handle to the front to open (see photo: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=13818&N=2004+113765).

You could just use a single piece of plexiglass, add a cabinet handle, and cut arount the equipment, without doing the extras of getting a hinge. Plexiglass won't crack as easily either, but you want to use a thick piece, so it doesn't bow in the middle without a support. It also cuts to fit around the equipment easier than glass.

Hi, yes you can make you own. Their are two types that you can make the first one. You will need the following a plastic or rubber hing from the pet store. Two pieces of glass or plexy glass cut to size of the top of your tank. Tank sealant and a knob. You may also need a glass cutter.
First cut out any area needed for filter. Insert the glass into one side of the hing. Now do the same with other piece of glass. Next put a small amount of the tank sealant in the center of the front edge of the top. Then place the knob in the sealant and let it dry for 24 hours.

For the second type you will need one piece of plexy glass cut to the size of the top of your tank. A exacto knife or glass cutter. Tank sealant and small knob. First cut out any area needed for filter. Second put a small amount of tank sealant in the center of top. Next place the knob in the center of the sealant and let dry for 24 hours.

I hope this is of some help to you.
