Not much anymore as the names have been intermixed so much and motels and hotels have taken ideas from one another..
However here is some history for you. The name
hotel" was derived from "hostel". (Hostels still exist today but have shared bathrooms (male and female) and only sleeping rooms are separate.) Years ago, hotels (also called "inns") were places to stay where you had a lobby to enter and the rooms were accessed from inside. There was a main eating area and the rooms primarily were for sleeping, just like hostels. The olden day hotels were more like what we'd term "bed and breakfasts" today. As modern times arose, "hotels" changed so that the sleeping rooms also contained bathrooms. Hotels also grew tremendously in size.
Motels were distinguished from hotels in two ways. Firstly, room access was from the outside and there were bathrooms in each unit. *In fact, years and years ago, some motels had a sink in the rooms but the toilets were in another room outside, like a public bathroom, but this didn't last long. Secondly, there was no common eating area. As motels evolved, restaurants were tacked on, making them similar to hotels in that they provided a common eating place.
The final distinction that "used to" exist was that motels started providing "kitchenettes" in the rooms. Hotels didn't do this because of the common eating area.
Nowadays, you can get hotels with kitchenettes if you pay more, while many motels just provide them. The main distinction between the two now is the outside versus inside access to rooms. They can each have any number of floors. Both motels and hotels have their perks. I have seen both with waterslides, pools, room service, etc. You will find more hotels in big cities because of the greater security they provide.

Motels started out to be places where travelers could get a room for the night. They were mostly along the highways. Hotels can be anywhere, highway or downtown, and a lot of them are more luxurious than motels

Hotels are generally nicer. Motels are more for people who are driving along the highway and need a place to stay for a night. (the mo is short for motor). Hotels are where people stay when on vacation for a few nights at a time.

Usually motels are long, and have one level with rooms in it; while hotels are many stories tall, with rooms on each level.
