Hmm...sounds like an iodine clock reaction.

One beaker contains a solution of hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid. The second beaker contains a solution of sodium thiosulfate, potassium iodide, and starch.

Upon mixing, the hydrogen peroxide begins converting the iodide ions into triiodide ions. Normally, these triiodide ions would then bind with the starch to immediately produce a blue-black color. However, the thiosulfate ions quickly reconvert the triiodide ions back to iodide. This goes on for a short time until the supply of thiosulfate ions has been exhausted, whereupon the solution immediately and dramatically turns dark blue or black. You can change the amount of time by changing the starting concentration of sodium thiosulfate.
