High octane gas is a waste of money for most cars. A few cars have a high compression engine and need the higher octane to prevent knock and pinging. If your engine is running allright (no knocking or pinging during acceleration) then changing to high octane will only accomplish one thing. It will deplete your purse more rapidly.

Only if you a high compression engine. In a high compression engine, gasoline with an octane rating too low will ignite prematurely (it will ignite before the piston as reached top dead center). In a gasoline engine, the air/fuel mixture should only ignite by a spark from the spark plug. Higher octane gas tolerates the higher pressures of high compression engines so they don't ignite prematurely. If you spend money for higher grade fuel when you don't need, you are waisting your money.

Some people think the higher grade fuel is cleaner or has more power. That is completely false!!!! The fuel grade is only designated by the octane rating, which has nothing to do with heating power of the fuel.

Your owners manual will tell you what octane rating the vehicle requires. Just buy fuel with a lower octane rating and you'll be fine.

Higher octane fuel is recomended for higher compression/performance engines. I have an old 91 Acura integra with a 4 banger and I get better gas milage off the cheap gas than I do the high octane with no noticable power difference between the two. Not sure why, what or how that is but I stick with the cheap stuff. I have new cycle with High compression and high octane is recomended so that is what I use in that. I have herd that lower octane fuel can have a diesel affect meaning it can combust early and cause it to run poorly but again that is only in high compression motors.

High octane gas is not only very good for your engine, but it also helps in acceleration. Lower octane fuels tend to have more impurities in them, which can leave deposits in your fuel injection. So for the long run, using higher octane fuels will keep your car healthy, and extend the life of it.

High octane burns cleaner and keeps the guts of you engin cleaner giving it longer life for starters. The reason I run it is because I have tracked my gas milage and it is better with the good stuff.

reasons to is if you have a high performance engine that requires it and if you don't have a hi-po engine and use high test you are wasting your money needlessly.

Only reason to get it is to prevent knocking.
Get it if the car knocks without it.

Main reason not to get it is cost.
Do not get it unless the car knocks without it.
