Ok my doctor just called and said my pap came back abnormal. I had a baby almost 5 months ago and when I was about 6 months pregnant he did a pap and it came back normal? I know it could be cancer or HPV, but would casue this if it was normal 6 months ago?

Does it mean I have an STD? I recently found a prescription bottle at my fiance's house that belonged to his kids mother. It was CprioFloxian, which is used for Gonnerhea and other infections. He said she put some pain reliever in it for him. I asked him why she was taking it and he said he didnt know.. I hope he hasn't slept with her and gave me something she had!!

First - take a deep breath - you are going to be absolutely fine.

(Phew).

The goal of pap smears is NOT to find cancer - but rather to find "pre-cancer" (we call it dysplasia).

Usually, it takes 4-7 years to move from normal to cancer on the cervix - so the odds of cancer are tiny - and whatever you have - will very likely be easy to treat (if treatment is needed at all).

Most abnormal paps are due to HPV infection.

And almost every women who has had intercourse has contracted some form of HPV (many doctors consider HPV as a marker for intercourse).

Yes - some forms of HPV are more likely to cause cancer than others (hence the development of Gardasil - the new vaccine).

Your doc will liely repeat the pap, maybe do a colposcopy (a microscopic evaluation of your cervix) and if necessary - "freeze" the cervix by cryotherapy (not too painful - some uterine cramping).

Or he/she may simply "monitor" your cervix.

Oh...and sometimes abnormal paps are simply another infection - like yeast or irritation after sex.

Then they are repeated and all is 100% fine.

Rest easy, kiddo!!

I had an atypical, then an abnormal for the follow-up, which scared me. However, the colposcopy and all the follow-up paps were normal. I never did figure out what caused the atypical and abnormal paps. It could be anything. I wouldn't worry unless you have another abnormal pap.

I had one come back abnormal once.....the reason was because they did it too soon after I'd had my period. They redid it after 3 months and it was fine. Infections can also cause results to be abnormal.

Cancer cells would be your greatest concern, but that doesnt mean a thing without further tests....they call and scare you to death even if they dont know anything yet. Try to stay positive until they test more......most come back negative.
good luck

If it came back abnormal, then he/she should have told you what was wrong...not that it was just abnormal..I would call them and question it and see what the problem is. Good luck!
