Only if the heard is actually standing in the water at the moment you are desireing to drink from the same source of water which probably is already full of harmful micro organisms.

I'd try to wait until I got to a place with clean drinking water coming from a well or tap water provided by the city water board.

OK -
Once I was hiking the high country in Colorado above the tree line and camped just below it. We were thirsty and thought since we were above anywhere where animals grazed, we would be safe. The water tasted so sweet and cold. We figured it would be OK. WRONG!

The wild beasts leave the remains of their meals where they drink thus contaminating the water. The result was that we got dysentery and were sick for a week afterward.

ALWAYS either boil your water or purify it. REI and other camping outlets sell water purifying kits. Use them.

Yes it is wise to be upstream when quenching your thirst. Remember this too....If your bottled Spring water came from a spring in north Florida there is a good chance one of my kids peed in the spring.

I fully agree! However, how do you know that the spot from where you are drinking is not downstream from another herd further up???
