there is a study going on that has been in the works for a long time into this issue. Most of the scientists think they have proven it is NOT free will. they site cases were people had accidents were objects became lodged in their brains and their actions change with regards to crime and deviance. This is scary to me though in that determining free will is not the reason could bring about precrime laws and such. Tie this with Edwards argument we need to have mandatory medical trips is really scary. Ill see if I can find the article.

The simple answer is free will....
Although I can understand the concept that, if it is all you have ever known, it would be easier for you to be susceptible to a life of crime...nevertheless, none of us live in a vacuum and there are always alternatives. It is up to each and every individual to make positive choices.
No matter the level of poverty, there are programs out there to help anyone willing to help themselves.

Free will. Criminals often don't think rationally when committing a crime. What is determinism?

Free will. People often make irrational choices, so there's clearly more at work than just pragmatic analysis.
I put no stock in determinism. But, really, if determinism is the case, then it doesn't matter, does it? I have no choice but to reject it.

I was the victim of a violent crime. I'm fortunately still here. The head bad guy was a nut job. He would still let you talk to him, even though he had real bad intentions. That's still a real bad memory. Hopefully, he's still in prison. He was not the type to rehibilitate. Knowing what I know now, I would of struggled a little harder then, to completely of putting him out of his misery. He never would of been missed.

Crime is the result of poverty. Which I guess is a result of the free will not to accept your free education and get a job.

It depends on the crime...
Sometimes it is a matter only of definition (i.e. the many victimless crimes), whereas other times it may be from aberrant behavior (capital crimes) or simply greed (white collar crimes) or pure need (petty crimes)...
I don't think it can be so easily categorized in spite of a desire to do so.

It's all free will! We all make choices, and we experience the consequences of our own choices and those of others.
