Why are they on those two coins ?

The years ago, most coins were made of precious metals such a gold or silver. The ridges are to prevent people from filing some of the metal off of the edge. The Nickel and Penny were not made of precious metal and so did not require ridges.

BTW- those ridges are called reeding or reeds. .

The Pony Express lost just 1 rider. It lasted only a short time as the railroad (Transcontinental) was completed and made the Pony Express redundant.
