...by saying the Bin Laden tape is a fake, even if they think it's real? Why give bin Laden a media victory? It's not like he'll be saying anything important, why let him use us?

Such a scenario could be interpreted in a different light.

Calling the bin Laden tape a fake would actually backfire on the administration (and the GOP by association) as the adminstration itself would be accused of fabricating it to scare the voters into keeping the White House in hawkish Republican hands, whether or not such a tape is authentic.

Edit: However, if an independent reviewer were to somehow corraborate the tape's authenticity, then the adminstration should have nothing to worry about, right? Then again, you are correct: they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Of course, they have only themselves to blame due to their history of misleading the public by displaying past tapes (and false terror alerts) solely for political gains. Remember our little October surprise from 2004? The administration has simply lost most of, if not all of, its credibility.
