Primarily, money was the issue. George III levied a variety of taxes on the colonies to support his war against the French and the Spanish. The colonies had no say in the tax levy and didn't take it well. The Coercive or "Intolerable" Acts followed, a new version of the 1765 Quartering Act was enacted by the English Parliament to provide housing for the British troops in occupied houses and taverns.

It was taxation more than any other issue - BUT - - you need to know that not all colonists wanted to break with England. A very rough estimate is that about one third wanted independence, one third wanted to stay with England, and one third wanted to stay out of it entirely.

It wasn't so much England as Great Britain, who was trying to control everything about them without giving them fair representation, and was taxing their pants off.

Because they were tired of being pushed around. The world was a bigger place then, Britian was far away. They thought they could get away with it and they were right --- just barely.

Fear of losing their right to decide their own taxes, and have their taxes set by Britian. "No taxation without represtation" started the problems...but the rebellion came because the British tried to punish them for protesting, then tried to take their military stores, leading to war.
