All cars "use" oil and may use as much as one or two quarts every 2,000-3,000 miles. The faster you drive on the Interstate and the harder you accelerate the more oil you will use or burn.

In an older vehicle the piston rings and cylinder walls will have more wear and tear and more oil will make its way into the combustion cycle and it will "use" more oil. When the cylinder walls and piston rings become very worn out, maily due to low oil pressure since the main and rod bearings will have excessive wear and oil presure drops, the engine can "smoke" or you will see whitish smoke coming from the tailpipe when accelerating. Sometimes it will smoke continously if there is major wear or damaged rings and oil control is lost.

When this occurs the catalytic convertor will be prone to getting clogged up and the spark plugs will look oily when removed and the car will not pass an emissions test.

Good Luck!

not black smoke, diesel engines do that b/c of excess fuel. it would be white smoke, and a very odd smell.it could smoke when you start ur car, or it could every time you take off from a stop light. or it could be burning bad and constantly smoke. if it just started add some Lucas engine oil treatment to the oil and it should help.

Lots of sensible answers about the blue smoke. Also if the oil level is falling and you need regular top-ups of oil it is a sign that the engine is worn out.

excess smoke from the tail pipe, check oil level regularly( that's a perfect indication somethings wrong) also look for leaks...check the spot after moving the car for oil on the pavement or if there's smoke coming from the engine compartment while the car is running.
