I was a legal secretary, and should know better, but right now I don't know where the original is. Even if you're young, don't you agree there should be such an instrument, to avoid chaos "just in case"?

Usually the original is in the drafting attorney's safe so he can get paid again on the back end for probating the will.

Every person should have a valid will, most people think they know where their assets would go if they died without a will, but few people understand intestate distribution of assets because thats what happens when a person dies without a will.

Intestate distribution can result in people you wanted to get stuff getting nothing, and people you didn't want to get stuff getting stuff. Also a will helps prevent family fighting over property, assets, and such. Nothing is more nasty than a good old fashioned probate or intestate battle for items between family.

Also the rules of wills are rather rigid, so few people should undertake to write their own will. Also using an at home will kit usually won't work unless your state accepts holographic wills and instead of filling out the form will you instead hand write its entire contents on a separate sheet of paper.
Getting an attorney to draft a will is rather cheap compared to the cost to your family of battling it out.

I'm a paralegal and yes, I have written a will. It is current for now (getting married next summer so will change it then) and yes, I know where the original is. Working with estates has taught me to always update my Will and always keep it where it can be located if needed. I have actually always had a Will since I was 23 (when my daughter was born).

Just before I went in for a biopsy last year I wrote a "will," which I gave to my wife. It's handwritten, and signed, and in Kentucky that will do.
