When the check engine light comes on, it stores a code in the computer.
This code can either be a "hard code" or a "soft code".
A hard code will stay on until you fix the cause and reset the computer.
A soft code will go away on its' own. You obviously had a soft code. Why did it go out on its' own. One of 2 reasons.
1) The condition that caused the code no longer exists (for example: extremely high humidity, dirty road conditions).
2) The car's computer detected the problem and made adjustments to correct the problem. This is possible for slight malfunctions.
Bottom line: Don't worry about it unless it comes on and stays on.

The check engine light should go on for a moment when you start the engine. If it no longer does this, the bulb burned out or is lose, or something is wrong with the light, but the original problem is not fixed. If the light still works properly, then then problem was probably the gas cap as someone else answered.

Maybe a fuel cap issue but if you're sure you tighten the fuel cap the last time you put gas and that's not the issue then it could be a sensor going bad. Nothing to worry about at the moment but if it keep happening or the lights comes on for a day or 2, then get a diagnostic done.

So you ignored it for 4 days and now want to know if you should look at it.
Find out what the code is and if it is a big issue. Do you want your Jag to fail you out on the road?
The codes is still there. It takes several starts and cool downs to clear the code.
You will never know until the Jag quits you or you go and have a look.
Get the codes read.

It may have been some "glitch". Don't WORRY about it unless it returns.
It also represents a problem with the emissions system- not the regular engine, so your engine is not going to "blow up"
If it returns take it to the shop for diagnosis.
Otherwise don't waste the money, if the problems not "active" the shop cannot DEFINITIVELY diagnose the problem. They can guess from experience and the code but they cannot be CERTAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may have been something as simple as the fuel gas cap having been removed and reinstalled and the sensor by the charcoal canister read it as a leak in the emissions system.
I wouldn't worry since it went away and you didn't note any running problems.
Good Luck!

]This is usually an indication of a vehicle's control computer receiving a faulty reading from a sensor on the motor. Your car has several sensors that constantly monitor things like fuel/air mix, head temperature, exhaust output, vacuum, etc.
Take the car in where they can run a diagnostic on it. It's probably not serious, but it could become serious later if left alone.

If it happened just after you filled your tank up with gas it was probably just the sensor that tells the computer that your gas cap did not get put back on tight enough. It will cause fumes to escape.
