As your AC operates it creates moisture in the case containing the evaporator. This moisture will develop bacteria that creates the odor. Sometimes the drain in the case will plug up and not drain the case effectively. Some auto supply stores sell a product you can apply to disinfect and deodorize. Follow the instructions and it will work for a couple months before you will need to reapply.

Typically if the smell lasts longer than a few days or weeks it is either from something someone spilled on the carpets, like milk, or someone left the window down in the rain and the carpet padding got soaked and is still wet.

There are a few options and that is replace the carpet padding or leave it (the car) out in the sun on very hot days and let it air out or have it (the car) professionally cleaned and deodorized which will cost more than $500.

Make sure there are no external leaks letting water into the interior and make sure the heater core isn't leaking. IF the tray under the A/C evaporator coil is not letting the condensation leak to the outside you can take a pipe cleaner or a bread tie/thin wire and poke it into the hole from under the car if you can't see or reach it from on top of the engine by the firewall.

Good Luck!

You have molds and bacterium growing in your vents. It would be a good idea to put it on recirculate and spray some antibacterial spray inside your car and let it circulate throughout the vent system. It would also help to run the fan with some heat with the windows down to air out the system.

Make sure the drain is working on the AC unit. If not get it unplugged.
