I need to get something simple, user-friendly and inexpensive. I simply need to check e-mail and do research. I prefer a desktop, but I have been told a laptop is a much better investment. What do you all recommend?

It all depends
Since your preference is a desktop , go for it
the desktop will probably be more powerful and wont slow down as quickly as a laptop.
Also the chances of a desktop overheating are slim, whereas my compaq presario laptop heats up to 102 degrees C (over the boiling point for water
The Laptop would be good if you want to be able to work in more than one room or you take frequent road trips.
Its all a matter of preference
A barebones Desktop would do an excellent job of suiting your needs at a much cheaper price.
Desktop is my opinion in this situation.
I sure hope this helps

Unless I need the mobility, I'd much rather work on a desktop. They're cheaper if you get the same features on both machines, the screen is usually bigger and better quality, and the keyboard is much easier to work with. The touch pad or itty bitty button that passes for a mouse is no substitute for the real thing, either.

To me, laptops are a classic recipe for carpal tunnel at some point. Their only saving feature is their portability.

I'd recommend a desktop, because you can add more applications you like. coz in laptops there's a lot of limitations, but in desktop you can add new things and hardwares. But the good about laptops is that you can bring it anywhere you want, but you must a have a wireless internet connection with it, and the problem wiuth desktop is that you cant bring it anywhere coz its too bulky. But you just check your emails and do some researches, i prefer a laptop.

A laptop needs a battery and/or a power supply
replacement battery's are expensive. a laptop is an easy target for thieves and thugs. a desktop is bulkier and
you get more bang for the buck, A laptop is convenient but hard to repair and heavy on the pocketbook
I saw a nice pc at walmart for 400 bucks emachines
all new keyboard speakers mouse and flat screen monitor.
It comes with windows vista but you can easily get that wiped and install windows XP and live happily ever after.

Don't buy Dell. I have had trouble since day 1 with mine and they do not come to your house if they can't fix over the phone. Besides it is VERY difficult to understand what they are saying with their heavy India accent. Yes Dell out source customer service.
