I feel your pain...I'm 57 and just started ballet classes again after a summer layoff.
Some suggestions:
1) Hang in there - even the professional dancers had to start once upon a time - you will get better. It is a slow process and your learning curve is at its steepest point now.
2) Stretch and warm up before class!!! If you don't you asking for injury - also stretch a bit after class during your cool down
3) Take a couple of Aleve right after you get done with center. It will help head off some of the pain. On the days after class, be sure to stretch a couple of times a day it will help with the soreness. Don't hesitate to drink some water during breaks staying hydrated will help keep your muscles from being quite so sore. ...it seems to work for me.
4) Welcome to the world of dance - if you hang in there, you will have better posture and move with more grace and ease. You will tighten up, tone up and maybe even lose a bit of weight.
5) I've been doing this a bunch of years and cannot do much center any more and forget grand jetes (arthritis in feet). But I can still do barre work .
6) Try to do your movements as perfectly as possible even if you can't get the extension you want... and don't force joints or muscles to the point of real pain.

it was your first class, and of course you're gonna be sore. i've danced for 10 years and still get sore after almost every class. i'm sure you as clumsy as you think, and you will get better. ballet is a great way to get in shape! have fun

... it was your first class... if it's anything like when I started into martial arts (and I would assume the same basics apply when starting into a new physical activity.. no matter the activity) then you just need to stick it out... in a couple of weeks the soreness will be behind you and in 6 months you'll think to yourself "Man I'm getting good at this ballet stuff"

I'm a dance teacher and the one mistake I see in all my girls is they come into class once a week and that's it. Youre going to have to put a little more into then one class a week. Make sure to add a little stretching and warm-up to your schedule everyday and it will get better. The firt few days, your going to be sore but then your body will get used to it. Hang in there! You can do it-

I think you just need to figure out an excersise plan to do everyday. Don't worry about being a begginner you most likely aren't the only one. just keep at it and don't get discouraged.

Well...you're starting about 20 years too late...(I started at age 5...am now 48)...
STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH and WARM-UP, WARM-UP, WARM-UP...
those are THE first things you should do...
never try to force your body to do something it cannot...
LISTEN to your instructor....DO what they tell you...
You should probably get a little better into shape before tackeling a class such as ballet...
KNOW your limitations...LISTEN to your body...
