Great question. It seems I never get the portals locked and they open up from time to time. Having friends who care about me sure helps in closing them. I guess ultimately it's a choice we make ourselves and hopefully we always choose the positive.

We, can close the Portals of self defeat by thinking Positive, not negative.

Beliefs that cause self-defeat are better understood as 'demons' - unexamined, unhealed ideas about the self that limit our experience of reality - RATHER than the word 'portal' which connotes an opening into a new reality.

What is hidden in the darkness (subconscious) has to brought out into the 'light of reason' to be dispelled. Contemplation is the only means of accomplishing this.

I believe that as humans we can never permanently close the portals you speak of. They will always be there but these feelings of self defeat are, to me, vital to understanding our complete selves. To coin an old phrase, we have to take the good with the bad.

Often, when self defeat comes along, I welcome it like a "guest of the moment"; temporary and afloat. I try to anatomize it, see what weakness it keeps within that might have brought about its defeat. Learning from it is worthwhile. It becomes a washable mark never too deep to become a permanent scar. Then it voluntarily takes itself off my open door...and get lost among the forgotten mistakes.

Have you seen "The Secret" yet? It's been very helpful to me. Self defeat is a family tradition, and therefore very ingrained and difficult to overcome.

I don't believe we can ever close those portals. The fact of their metaphysical existence keeps us aware of our faults and keeps our minds and hearts alert.
We can, however, live as if those portals did not exist.
