My fiance and I had a baby boy in April of 06. He was a healthy baby, only had a couple colds, went to his regular check-ups, and was so smart and happy. We woke him up one morning in September, fed him his bottle and layed him back down to sleep(he was still sleepy). I went back to bed(in the same room), and my fiance went downstairs to watch tv. 20 or 30 minutes later he went over to check on him, and he started screaming that something was wrong, he wouldn't wake up, so we got him out, started CPR and called 911. He was still warm, and they kept trying to get a heartbeat, but it didn't work,he ended up passing away in the hospital. Just being through something like that is unbelievable. But on top of that, the police were doing an investigation. After an autopsy they found cracked ribs, and ended up ruling it undetermined. My question is how can a baby have cracked ribs and we not know it? Why didn't any doctors catch it? And how do you live with not knowing what caused him to pass?

First of all, let me say how very sorry I am for your loss. The death of a child has got to be the worst kind of loss that a human can possibly experience. I will say a prayer for you right now that God will lay his healing hands on you. I am going to include a site that may give you some comfort.

As far as the cracked ribs, it probably happened when you were attempting CPR. A baby's ribs are very delicate and didn't cause your son's death. I don't think you will ever have the answers until you are called home. There are no words that will ever completely comfort you, but always remember that God is there. God Bless!

Even doing CPR properly can cause cracked ribs. That is probably what happened. [ either you two or the rescue squad ].
A lot of times baby's death's are undetermined, especially stillborn.
When you decide to have another baby, be sure you tell the docs, so they order an apnea [ not breathing ] moniter. This records the heart and lung actions, and screeches an alarm when it doesn't pick up a signal.
This syndrome can run in families.

CPR likely caused the cracked ribs. Even in adults CPR can crack ribs. I'm sure you did nothing wrong!
I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. I would suggest you join a support group for other parents in similar situations. Your son will live on in your memory, but don't let his loss ruin your life. It's not healthy, and it's not what he would have wanted.
Take care of yourself.

I'm so sorry...my prayers are with you.
The cracked ribs (perhaps from CPR?) could be a result of a certain disease (Osteogenesis imperfecta) which causes the bones to break because of a protein deficiency.
In one instance, a young couple were charged for abusing their baby because it had cracked bones and ribs, but the disease was henceforth discovered as active. Ask your doctor about it.
Also, inquire about SIDS—Sudden Infant Death Syndome—and see if that could have been the problem. It is often brought on by the baby being laid to sleep on his stomach.
God bless.

First let me say that I am so sorry for your loss.
If the baby had a recent cold with coughing this could have cracked the ribs. A fall off of the bed or couch also could have done it. I am sure that you already know this.
As far as the Dr's. not finding it, you have to remember that Dr's. "practice" if you didn't know about the ribs and didn't mention it to the Dr. He would have never checked for it.
Your only solace in this is to rest your mind with the knowledge that God had another plan for your precious child. I don't think there is anything you could have done to prevent this.

First of all... my sincere heartfelt sympathy to you and your fiance. I get teary eyed just thinking about something like this happening to my own child. As far as the cracked ribs go--did you do chest compressions when you did CPR? That is often the explanation for rib damage on someone that had CPR performed on them. As far as a cause of death-- did they rule that it was SIDS? Unfortunately, there is no known reason for SIDS. I wish that I could offer something more to you. I hope that you find the closure that you seek.

The cracked ribs are more than likely from giving CPR. It happens when doing compressions. Many people have broken ribs from CPR. Sounds lake late onset of SIDS. You may never know the cause. I also am very sad for your loss. We will keep you in our nightly prayers tonight.

As far as your baby's cracked ribs it could have happened with the cpr having being minor fractures unable to notice from the naked eye. First I send my condolences to you and your husband. Secondly not being funny but whoever your doctor may be ought to be locked up or degree taken away, most times doctors should examine the baby closely where they are able to see something is wrong, y'all should have something for that. All I can say is to just live your life to the fullest and be happy because as you can see life is too short. Don't shed tears of pain, shed tears of joys that he is in a better place and what if he lived with that but something was worse or all the therapy, madness and frustrations you have to see it both ways it was God's doing to take him from all the hurt and pain he could have been feeling. Just cherish every moment you have with your loved ones now and be grateful still. And live with knowing that your baby lives inside of you and is watching over you, he/she don't want you to live in sadness. If it was one of y'all and he was alive you'll want him to do the same be the best that he/she can be and continue to live they're life.

First, I am so sorry for your loss. I know the words of some stranger on yahoo answers cannot possibley compensate for the loss of your child. I want you to know that you, your family and your precious angel are in my thoughts and prayers.
If CPR was preformed then the chest compressions are the most likely reason his ribs were cracked.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you must be going through. Could the cracked ribs be from the CPR that was initiated?
My prayers are with you and your family.
