First pope, Saint Peter ( sorry, I don't know his last name ), appointed by Our Lord Jesus Himself ( exact date unknown ).
According to the Bible that is how Peter was appointed ( I don't know the exact quote, but you can find it in the Gospels )
Also, that is how the Papacy was created. After Peter was killed, Saint Lineus was elected. He was the second pope.
The procedure has remained the same until now. Approximately 268 popes have been in the Holy See

Nadie - You are so misinformed about the popes. The Apostle Peter NEVER was a pope. The first pope known by that title was Damasus I who reigned from 366-388. All Roman bishops took the title after Peter's death around 68 AD. Peter was not appointed but ordained as an Apostle by Jesus Christ. A bishop title is a much lower rank than an Apostle. All members of the early Christian church were called saints - as they were addressed by Paul's letter to them. Saints, for living a "pious" life or were killed because of their faith are no different than the early Christians who, again, were saints as well. The papacy was created by Constantine, emperor of the Roman Empire, guilty of murdering many of his family. Linus was never elected (he most likely took over after Peter died), because that process did no exist until many years later. Linus was the FIRST bishop after Peter. PETER 33 – 64/67, LINUS 67? – 79(?) , ANACLETUS 76/79(?) – 88/92, CLEMENT 88/92 – 97, EVARISTUS 97/99 – 105/107, etc. "POPE" titles were given to Roman bishops retroactively in the 4th century.

For those who want to WHY THE SAVIOR STATED: "Upon this rock I will build my church: READ THE ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. IT WAS JESUS'S ANSWER TO PETERS STATEMENT AFTER JESUS ASK THE APOSTLES "WHO HE (JESUS) WAS.

According to Roman Catholic tradition, the Apostle Peter was the first pope. This is based on Jesus saying to Peter, "Upon this rock I will build my church."

There is some debate as to whether this constitutes Peter being elevated to papal office. But it is reasonable to say that Peter most likey was the first Bishop of Rome, and that is one of the Pope's titles.

The first Pope was Shimon Ben Jonah, who was called Peter. At the seaside town of Caesaria Philipi, Jesus said to him: "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church". Jesus and Simon (as well as the other apostles) spoke Aramaic. The word in Aramaic for the name "Peter" and the noun "rock" is "Cephas" (pronounced "Seefas"). Some of the last words spoken by Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels, are also in Aramaic: "Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachtani" (My God! My God. Why have You forsaken me? That phrase is the opening of the 22nd Psalm of David, written nearly five hundred years earlier. After Peter's execution by crucifixion in Rome, he was suceeded by Linus.

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
