It was about 50p
When I had my first pint in 1958 (illegally) it was one shilling and sixpence (71/2 pence) and in a pub we went to when broke one shilling and 1 penny( slightly less than 7pence)

What I can not understand is that hops groe in Kent only a little malt and sugar goes into it with yeast. All of thesed easily available How is it that it costs more than a gallon of petrol which can shipped for miles refined in vast tanked taken to a garage, on which there is as much tax

Yes. It's a lot of liquid, even if there was no alcohol there (it's just over five and a half litres). To work out the number of alcohol units that is, just multiply your 5% by the number of litres: 5 x 5.6 = 28. So you'd be drinking twenty-eight units of alcohol. The most you're supposed to be drinking in any on week is twenty-one units for a man and fourteen units for a woman. But hey, your liver's a pretty resilient organ if you don't habitually abuse it.
