Even "absolute" monarchies were not absolute. They had to deal with many rich landowners, Dukes and other people of power, and take their interests into account, as well as the welfare of the gentry and the common people (to not end up on the end of a rope themselves).
In many ways, there were advantages to a monarchy, but if you had a bad one, you were in deep shiite, and you couldn't just vote them out - just wait till they died and hope the next one would be less stupid or evil.

The only advantage to the common surf was some small degree of protection from loosing EVERYTHING they had to marauding invaders and being slaughtered.
They had to pay a very high price for that small amount of protection.
It did help establish a system of trade so each family didn't have to do EVERYTHING for themselves, but could buy or barter for other necessities.
