Byzantium was a great civilisation with artistic richness, and classical education, like philosophy, maths, etc., despite the common misconception. There was a decline, but it was not because of Byzantium. Look what happened in the Middle Ages in the West: total barbarians. Byzantium was in fact much more advanced, so it rather preserved what was important. As for destruction, the concept of conservation like we have it never existed then. Ancient Greeks too destroyed previous temples (archaic) to build classic ones. So they did later. Some incidents of fanaticism, like the killing of Hypatia, and so on, are black pages that never fail to exist in any bright book of history. (Don't forget how Socrates died and Themistocles was ostracised!)

Both the ancient Greeks and the early Christians enriched our world, but they also did some stupid things as well. They were human, just like us.
The great Christian scholars of the Middle Ages knew that we owe a big debt to classical Greek and Roman writers, philosophers and scientists, along with the many great Arab thinkers whose work filtered through to us over the centuries. Later we discovered how much India and East Asia also had to offer the world, and we're still only just learning the mysteries of many great African, Australasian, South American and Native American cultures.
Everyone who went before us on this earth has enriched our culture, if we only have the intelligence to understand what they gave us and the humility to accept it.
The only ones who can ruin our culture are ourselves. If we don't respect this planet and each other, and learn to solve our differences by talking rather than fighting, we will destroy everything of value.

Christianity even if i respect it and i m not believer, damaged many ancient documents, and monuments...It was a kind of Inquisition..Also in Europe, dont forget that Spain had the worst Inquisition.During my studies in Spain, a teacher had told us that the writers were hidding into the walls by the fear of the church...
What the religion offered now is the byzantine architecture and art known all over the world, but we can not forget also the fanatism which destroyed important things, and the arabs saved them(ancient grek writers)
