My guy friend and I have been friends for ages. Last year he kinda acted like he had a crush on me. Looking at me in class, getting mad at the guy with a crush on me, sitting and walking with me.
But now this year, we don't know anyone but each other and you'd think that would make us closer, but he is not talking to me, yet he's talking to other girls. We've exchanged smiles and waves. That's all. Why is he doing this?

It would be impossible to tell you how he is feeling.

Instead of waving and saying hi, next time you see him stop and talk to him. Ask him how he is doing.
He might think that you are ignoring him.

Often times people outgrow each other, find other friends, interests, and the good friends they use to be turn out to be casual friends.
You could ask him the next time you talk to him. Just say hey we use to be good friends and now we hardly talk, what gives?

Good Luck, faith

Have you ever heard the expression Friends can be lovers but lovers can not be friends? Maybe your friend was very protective of you and felt himself having feelings that he didn't think was reciprociated. Male egos are easily bruised. Strange behavior and could be because of multiple things. I once was told by a friend of 27 years that he just realized I was human. He thought I was above that. He no longer put me on the pedistal of beyond human. Maybe he feels that he is feeling you out to see if you act like he did the year before. It is really hard to say. However, if his friendship is worth it, ask him. But, be sure he is 'the type of guy' that can talk about feelings and be open if not then questions will scare him away.

Best wishes. I'd rather lose a lover than a friend :(

Well, what happened when he acted like he had a crush on you? Did you lead him on, or ignore it? Maybe his giving you the cold shoulder probably out of embarrassment, reverse psychology. What you really want from him? just friends or a relationship? Whatever it might be I think he got into you :-)))

He's branching out and moving forward and making new friends, it doesn't mean he doesn't want the old ones. If you like this boy, you better let him know before he finds another girlfriend.

I'd say his plan is working he's really got your attention now. it's the laid back approach. he shows less attention , you show more interest. or maybe he just got tired of trying.
