Gary and Bad Seed gets my vote!
Always add a 50/50 mix of the recommended antifreeze / distilled water in the coolant recovery tank. Never dilute with plain water as this will severely alter the freeze point of the coolant.
Use the correct *viscosity motor oil listed in your glove -compartment handbook, under - specifications.
This handbook is the cars Bible. No weird viscosity motor oil
Never dilute the windshield wiper fluid. That raises the freeze point also.

With every fill up, after awhile you will get a feel for how much it is using but it is always a good idea to check frequently.
The "water tank" should be a translucent plastic tank that is easy to see the fluid level through so checking that is a matter of glancing at it when the hood is up, unless you are in th U.K. in which case you would have to raise the bonnet to check the fluid level.
DONT do what I used to do, which is run it until the oil light comes on and then add 2 quarts, not recommended LOL.

The best answer is every time you fill up at the gas pump.

Did you mean your coolant tank or the washer fluid tank? I check the washer fluid every time I pop the hood and check the oil and I glance at the coolant over-flow tank as well.

If planning a long trip you should always check everything (including tire pressures) before leaving and bring along some extra washer fluid and a quart of oil and maybe a gallon of water just in case you spring a leak in a heater hose or radiator hose.

Good Luck!

Try to check it twice a week. Or when you are filling up the car at a gas station. Caution. Check the water when the car is cooled down.

What I do is when I put gas in I check the oil water and look over the motor for any leaks or vacuum hoses not looking right, hope this helps.

I always check before any long journey (but I make one at least once every 2 weeks). I also make sure to change the oils every 7-8000 km.
