There's this thing going around that we should have our children absent from school on the 11th sort of as a petition to make that day a legal holiday to show remorse for the thousands lost that day. I think its a good idea. If we can have a holiday for a dead president why not for the loss of thousands?

Instead of a holiday...Make it a remembrance day for all those victims of 9/11.At a certain hour everyone should stand and be quiet so they can remember.......the good of these victims and the people who came out to help afterwards...

It shouldn't be very difficult to mourn the dead from 9/11 without a day off. In fact, perhaps it is better that children are in school so they can learn and discuss the impact of 9/11.
If 9/11 decomes a legal holiday, 12/7 should become an even bigger holiday.
I'd venture to say very few will remember what 12/7 actually is.

We no longer "have a holiday for a dead president". We used to have two (one each for Washington and Lincoln), but they were consolidated into a single holiday for all Presidents, living and dead.

Currently, the only deceased individuals who have their own holidays for which schools and government offices close are Martin Luther King, Jesus (Christmas and possibly Good Friday), and possibly Columbus. We also have a generic Memorial Day in May for deceased military personnel (which would include most of the Pentagon 9/11 victims), but that does not honor any one individual.

I think "holiday" is the wrong word to use. Memorial or Observance would be better. I think we have enough of those, but that's just me. We could do away with Presidents day, as not all of them are deserving of celebration and there are only forty two of them. Other great American's have served this country without being president. Benjamin Franklin and Thaddeus Stevens come to mind.

I don't think we will ever forget 9/11/01. Just as we will always remember 12/07/41, as being the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We don't need the government to make the day important, we can observe it in our own individual ways.

I agree with you totally. This was a very tragic event that happened and thousands were lost that day. This event to me is almost as bad as all the U.S. soldiers putting their lives on the line for this country, in order to get things straight in Iraq. There definitely should be a special day on the calendar commited to the 9/11 tragedy. I was watching that video when it happened to the two towers. I'm sure that all the family and friends of loved ones will have some type of memorial service that day. My heart goes out to all of the victim's families.

While i agree with you completely everyone knows that within a few years most people will treat it as an excuse to shop or barbecue & will forget the meaning of the holiday just like most(not all) Americans have forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day & Veterans Day.

I agree with the above ^^ post. It will just wind up being a day retailers will take advantage of and the whole meaning of the holiday will be lost.

Having seen afar the smoke from the Twin Towers, having had a NYPD friend killed in 9/11 seeing my around the block neighbor whose husband was killed on that day, your idea sounds good.

It would be ok so long as you don't let them watch all the 9/11 melodrama that is sure to be on television that day!
