more than likely it's low on brake fluid. this is not a sure fire sign that something is wrong but it does mean that it's possible you have worn brake pads or a leak in the hydraulic system. to be safe, have your brakes checked.

There are three reasons why this light may be on:
1. The parking brake/emergency brake pedal has not returned to its full upright position and the "switch" is not compressed making it think the brake is still "on". Sometimes you have to coax them back into position with your hand to make the light go off.
2. The fluid in the brake fluid reservoir is too low. There's a sensor that measures the fluid level. Obviously if the fluid is low there is a leak in the brake system somewhere.
3. The proportioning valve or JSOP valve that distributes brake fluid pressure to the rear brakes has moved and this will make the light come on. When this happens there is almost always a leak in a rear brake cylinder or caliper or hose.
If you had the brakes recently serviced there may be some air in a line and this will make the JSOP valve move as well. They will just need to bleed the brakes and this will reset the JSOP valve and turn off the light.
Good Luck!

Low brake fluid or you need your brakes serviced. They will check it for free at most auto repair shops.

I assume mean emergency brake. Just be sure is fully released. sometimes you have to push on release to contact sensor switch. If switch is defective it can be replaced.
