I hurt my back last week after a particularly intense work out. I left the gym feeling fine, but felt a horrible pain a few hours later while reaching for the coffee pot! (wish I could say I did it lifting a car off an injured motorist, but of course thats not what happened) It still hurts 6 days later - dull pain in my lower back and butt area. Are there any exercises I can do to loosen it up? How long after the pain stops should I wait to go back to the gym? I am going crazy not exercising! Thanks for any advice - I thought I would be better by now!

If your injury is indeed a pulled muscle, in time it will heal itself. To help with the discomfort you may want to apply heat to the affected area. Over the counter ibuproffen would also be a benefit. Products such as Advil, or Motrin will provide relief from pain caused by inflammation. If however, the muscle pain doen not resolve itself in a few days, you might consider seeing a physician. Either you have a greater injury than you might think, or you may even have a (UTI) urinary tract infection causing pain in your back. Should that be the case only antibiotics would be effective in treating this. As far as returning to the gym you can immediately. It may in fact help provided you do not over work the muscle/s involved. Swimming is another great way to work the muscles because it gives right amount of tension and support.

Dear Katie Rose, I ask you first, did you properly stretch after you worked out? You know that stretching is more important than the work out itself, both before and after. If you did, then you may want to take hot baths and warm oil massages. At- least, with fond memories, those two things always helped me. The stretching exercise that always works for me, is to lay on my back and bring my left knee, then my right knee up to my chest and hold for 7-10 seconds. The other exercise I do, is sit up straight on the edge of a chair and twist my upper body to the left for7-10 seconds, the turn to the opposite direction for 7-10 seconds. Good luck and God Bless.

Never exercise on an injury. That's about the worst thing you can do. Get some prescription muscle relaxers from your Dr. and rest. You have to wait it out, there is no other way.
