I don't think people understand stem cell research well. It is not a this or that answer. There are different kinds of stem cells. There are some types of stem cell research some might think is ethical or other types people think are not.

Adult stems cells
Embryonic stem cells
Umbilical cord stem cells

Adult stem cells are most frequently gotten from bone marrow. They are fully developed and can turn into many but not all types of blood cells.

Embryonic stem cells come from a recently fertilized egg. Women who use artificial fertilization of their eggs often find that more eggs become fertilized than they plan to allow to grow into a baby. So those eggs contain stem cells.

Umbilical stem cells come from the discarded parts of a newborn babies umbilical cord. Part of the cord is discarded and this is the part that is used.

I think given the breath of use if stem cells and the benefit and potential benefit to so many people it must continue. I do have some concerns about stem cells are harvested, but I believe those concerns could be addressed with good oversight.

I do understand some people's concerns with embryonic stem cells, but if these cells are going to be discarded, I think they are better off being used in research. To me it is not that much different from donating your organs after death.

So ethically, I think we need to help find cures for people who lives are disabled by neurological disease using stem cells.

Its a toughie, I know many people dont know which way to go on this question. That would usually be me. As a Libra I am usually sitting on the fence with most issues.

However I am horrified at the demonic nature of using embryonic cells. I just am, it literally makes my skin crawl.

I am not a religious fanatic, I believe in pro choice, and womens rights, but abortion, which I wouldnt choose for myself is a termination of a pregnancy, it isnt harvesting embryonic cells - I dunno there is something in me that finds that totally demonic. I have never used that word about anything in my life before.

I dont usually get that worked up over much of anything but everything in me abhores the idea.

There has to be another way. Or no way. There is cure for my disabilities and I accept that. I live my life as best I can. I would NEVER EVER accept a cure if it involved embryonic stem cells. NEVER.

To me the whole reproduction process is miraculous, the way two tiny invisible to the human eye cells unite to grow all the parts needed to create a human being.

I took years of science (Biology) in University and I understand the scientific hows and whys but viewing it scientifically it is STILL a miraculous process. IMO

lol Stem Cell research is to help and possibly cure diseases. Stem cells have the potential to cure hundreds of diseases and save posssibly millions of people. If they let it continue. There is a lot of bad propaganda against it that have made up a bunch of bad stuff about it.

No one is against stem cell research. People argue about the use of embryonic stem cells. However abortion is legal and these babies are more "alive" than in vitro fertilized eggs that are used for generating embryonic stem cells.

In any case, embryonic stem cells are a waste of our efforts and everyone engaging in this debate is wasting their time. Instead of focusing on something far off, why not focus on the fact that people are given a new lease on life using adult stem cells.

In addition to the http://www.youtube.com/user/cellmedicine (youtube channel of the stem cell clinic Cellmedicine), i have included some references of adult stem cells being used successfully in patients with heart disease, stroke, and liver failure. Its funny how no one pays attention to these SCIENTIFIC FACTS but instead argues philosophical BS about the meaning of life...

Developing the research. An actual person suffering from a disease is vastly more important than a cluster of cells.

prevent embryonic stem cell research , every baby has the right to be born, not used as raw material in some unholy experiment . If non embryonic stem cells are used I am for it but the slaughter of the most vulnerable of us is unconscionable

There is only one group that is objecting tothe use of embryonic stem cells--and that is the religious right. Their objection is based on their religious beliefs. They are entitled to their belifs--But they ARE NOT entitled to force them on the rest of us.

In short, this is not an "ethical issue" at all--it is a case of an extremist religious group attempting to violate violate everyone else's freedom--and endangering countless lives in the process.

a number of remarkable discoveries have come about via ADULT stem cell research. But nothing has come about via FETAL stem cell research. I say go with the one that has been proven and forget about the other. And there is no debate about the ethical or morality of using ADULT stem cells.

Seeing as how the way stem cell process is done I am against it. And I have a rare genetic disorder, that has no cure. I have neurofibromatosis.

I really don't like the idea of growing a 'person' and using them as spare parts.
