I hear people complain about being politically correct all the time. I never had a problem with it. It seems like it would take more effort to go out of the way to say something non-PC than to just go ahead and use the PC term. Political correctness, to me, is just being polite when enountering strangers. Is that such a difficult task to accomplish?

Well, it is not quite the same as having excellent manners which many of us are still challenged enough with in finding. Being PC is not about saying thank-you. It's something very different,

It is difficult to be PC because being PC is actually a relatively new concept for all of us. Being PC is something that has come about only in the last few decades.

It's difficult for anyone to be PC for a number of reasons. My favorite being number 1.

1. We're all human with the capacity to think and form our own opinions--Our opinions may not match the opinions of others or what is "generally" accepted.
We tend to express our opinions in various forms and often times, offend others in doing so.

2. We tend to learn bad things from our parents, ie) racism, prejudice etc and perhaps carry on some of those traits regardless of how much we dislike the thought of having them.

3. Being PC is a bit much for most people. It takes a seriously conscience effort on the part of absolutely ANYONE in any given "random" situation not to say something wrong. It's easy to accidentally refer to someone or something by the wrong terminology and not even KNOW that it's offensive to them.

because being "politically correct" is sometimes in the eye - or ear - of the beholder.

So who gets to judge what is politically correct or not?

Am I being politically incorrect when I say asians are bad drivers, or am I just being honest because of my personal experiences?

Am I being politically incorrect if I call someone black, instead of african american, or are they being politcally incorrect for calling me white?

Keeping up with the ever changing definition of politically correct is, indeed, a difficult task to accomplish.

Being polite is a whole different thing.

some stuff like calling an asian person chinese or an hispanic person a mexican is rude because who are you to decide what country they are from. Any white American would get offended if they were called English all day just because they are white, but some might not look at it that way yet.

This whole black, white, or brown thing i don't understand yet. I mean it is their color. I wouldn't really care if someone called me brown but everyone is different i guess.

People will attempt to be savvy and be politically IN-correct until they get punched in the face. Then, they usually revert back to PC.

Only White people are forced to be politically correct. Minorities can say almost anything they want to about Whites. While White Americans are forced to walk a tight rope, & try not to offend any minority group.

as quickly as you become a woman with that intercourse substitute operation you have been thinking having, then no person will care lots in case you're polictically superb or no longer. Stereotyping human beings isn't as offensive once you become a minority in society. tremendously one as freaky as a ex-guy.

PC is sugar coating BS that lets people feel better about not having to deal with something because it is hidden behind some ridiculous wording...

the politeness part of it can and should be easy.

the part where you have to watch what you say, or have to dance around certain subjects, can be an impediment towards dealing with uncomfortable subjects honestly and openly.

Being politcally correct means not confronting
people who claim that whites are racist, but
that other ethnicities are not.

For example, in Y!A mention that southern
Italians have black, curly hair and brown
eyes, while northern Italians have blond
hair and blue eyes because Africans
invaded southern Italy over and over again,
and you will get thumbs down.

Whereas, if you mention that many
Europeans and Americans raped slaves,
and that is why there are many light-
skinned blacks, you will not get any
thumbs down.

That is the jist of the problem with
political correctness. People hold all
ancestors of the winners accountable
for all kinds of things they did not do.
