He detected low or no compression in a cylinder. Did he try sealing the piston rings with oil? This test is in addition to a compression test to isolate compression loss. Generally speaking if the rings are worn or stuck in the piston grooves a couple of squirts of oil in the cylinder will improve compression enough to indicate "bad'' or stuck rings. If the compression does not change at all the valves probably are to blame.
A couple of things to try: At your next oil change add a quart of Rislone instead of one of the recommended quarts of oil. This product is an extremely high detergent product to remove gum, varnish, sludge from your crankcase. It can and often does clean the piston grooves freeing up the rings to do their job.
Meanwhile check engine oil daily. If the rings are to blame oil usage will be quite severe.

I met a woman once who had that same problem. What happened to her car is that the head gasket was defective. One of the holes where coolant was supposed to go through wasn't punched through completely, and the #3 exhaust valve wasnt' getting cooled enough. That caused that exhaust valve to burn out.

I simply popped off the head and replaced just that one valve (first I had a machine shop re-surface just that one valve seat and fly-cut the head).

The car ran perfect when I was done, and she only had to pay $125 ($75 parts & machine shop, $50 for me).

If your engine is old and tired, replacing it is probably the best way to go, but if you have an unusual problem like this gal had, fix only the problem.

More than like if only one cylinder is gone it is a burnt valve. this can be fixed with a valve job and not a complete engine. will cost about $600-800. should take to another mechanic or two for another opinion. Or like you say drive til it dies. Keep pink slip in glove box and give to tow truck company.

It could overheat and die at any time. Could even catch fire if ignition or residue reaches the oil in the sump.
