Conservatives understand these issues, neocons do not. Neocons think that rights are only for criminals. The argument that polygamy and beastiality will be legalized if gay marriage is legalized is a specious attempt to demonize the issue. They made the same arguments when they were against the legalization of interracial marriage.
“[T]he State's prohibition of interracial marriage . . . stands on the same footing as the prohibition of polygamous marriage, or incestuous marriage, or the prescription of minimum ages at which people may marry, and the prevention of the marriage of people who are mentally incompetent.”

The difference between the two is that gay marriage is something people do, whereas the patriot act is something the government does. Most conservatives today see people as a worse threat than the government.
Another difference between the two is that proponents of the patriot act say it's temporary, whereas proponents of gay marriage don't think it should be temporary.
Interestingly, there are conservatives who don't see anything wrong with gay marriage. They're called libertarians. And they oppose the patriot act.

And if I see both? Parts of the Patriot Act were not well thought out and need to be revised to not only protect us but our civil liberties as well. Marriage if you get right down to it was a religious union and somehow became part of a government function as well, probably to get more taxes. I believe it simple should only be called a marriage if conducted by a religious institution and civil union if not done so. Hence protecting the religious rite but still allowing others to partake of the benefits provided by the law of couples.

I think that you are demanding many leaps in logic with this question.
My opposition to gay marriage is on different grounds than you have stated.
I am cautious about the Patriot Act but recognize the Democrats supported it along with the Republicans.
Start at some coherent place and the answers will be more logical.

Because they truly believe that national security is more important than civil liberty. . . It's the fundamental difference between Conservatives and Liberals.

The people who think in the way you say (which does not in any way mean all Conservatives) are typically the self-appointed moral protectors. These are the type of people who tend to see the world in absolutes of good and evil, based solely on what theyve been told to belief. They are terrifying.

I am lost here. How do you connect gay, beastiality and the patriot act with big government thrown in? Please rethink your question . An observation: what you don't have can not be taken away.

regardless of my stand on this issue, I want the first responder to inform us how gay marriage will lead to legalized statutory rape. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard.

Apples and oranges.
Gay marriage opens the legal route for polygamy and legalized statutory rape.
The patriot act only protects people, just like defense of "traditional" marriage.
