Dreft has got it good on this one- some where along the lines they convinced many women their babies can ONLY have Dreft for their clothes. NOT TRUE. Don't use 'regular' detergent, but you can use perfume/dye free detergents-I used a generic brand for my last son,. saved a ton of $ over Dreft!

You need the 'free' detergents as babies can have allergies to the perfumes and dyes, but it doesn't have to be dreft.

Just use regular detergent that is dye and perfume free. I used Dreft the 1st time around with eack of my kids but once it was out I used the regular stuff and we never had any problems.
All makes baby det now too and it's cheaper then Dreft tho

Dreft is not necessary, it is just a big money maker. I suggest using a Free & Clear detergent(I use purex Free & Clear), to be sure that baby does not have sensitive skin. But you can use regular detergents and switch to a Free & Clear if your baby shows signs of irritation.

Its not necessary to use dreft you can use any hypoallegenic detergent. I use all for babies and it is a lot cheaper than dreft. (its the same price as regular all). Regular detergent can cause a rash on babies skin because their skin is so delicate. I once accidently used regular all in my daughers laundry so i just set my washer on a second rinse and they came out fine.

You will only know when you try it on your baby. Some are definitely sensitive. If you try regular detergent and it breaks baby out, I would still go with Baby All. It is nearly HALF the price of Dreft!! I use "Bounce Free" dryer sheets. I just buy them all the time and use them for every load.

I tend to keep baby loads seperate, but it's mostly out of convenience. She has much more laundry on a daily basis! (Poop accidents, spit up, dirty blankies, etc.) Oh and I wash all baby's stuff together regardless of color and add "shout color catchers".

Bottom line, you just end up doing whatever works best for you!

I was told to use a dye and perfume free laundry detergent, and to wash my laundry seperate from my baby's. (by the hospital, after I gave birth). When babies are still very young, they have extra sensitive skin, which may cause them to break out due to the laundry detergent. My mom accidentally washed a couple of onesies in regular detergent, and sure enough, the baby broke out in a little rash on the back....it was no biggie, but it did make a difference...i should add though that my son in general has sensitive skin.

No it's not necessary. Dreft is getting a lot of sales from this belief. Your baby will be fine wearing clothes washed with the rest of the family's.

I have never washed my daughter's clothes separately.

a friend of mine with a baby boy swears that it's so important to use dreft. i'm having a baby in january and have already washed some of his clothes and personally i don't see the point. i buy hypoallergic because regular detergent makes my skin breakout. so i have just washed his stuff in that too. because really if you should wash the baby's clothes in the same stuff you wash yours in. they are going to be laying on you and have their face on your clothes so they are still going to come in contact with your detergent if you use another kind. my friend thinking i'm going to be sorry but she's just crazy. no one in my family or anyone else i know with babies uses a that detergent except for her. it is way more money than my deterent and it's pointless to buy.

I would definitely use Dreft first. Then when the child is a little bit older (I tried this at 4 months) wash one outfit in your regular detergent. If your baby doesn't break out, you're good!
