It might be better if you bought a new one with a good warranty. Most brand name laptops offer very good onsite and offsite warranties today.
Take your time and shop around, but go with a brand name. Look at HP, Toshiba, Compaq, Acer and even Dell has some good deals with great warranties too.
Here's a link to some various models at TigerDirect that can get you started at what to look for: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=17&name=Laptops-Notebooks
In regard to your damaged boot disc, that can be fixed by having it reformatted. But that would wipe out your Windows 2000 and it would have to be re-installed.
If you have your Windows 2000 installation CD, you might want to reformat your drive and put Windows back on it and sell your notebook on eBay and get something for it.
Good Luck!

Because it is a laptop, where almost everything is soldered into the system board, upgrading anything except the memory is almost impossible. A new display bulb will run $300-400.
By the time you price a new laptop (they start at about $600), it would probably be about the same cost to replace as to repair.
Kind of like putting a new engine in an old car. A week later the transmission goes out, then the brakes, then the alternator....
Since the money is about the same, go with the new.

Your better off buying new. You can get a new computer for as much or even less than what it will take to do just 2 of those repairs, plus a warranty. Of course this will all depend upon what you want/need in a new computer, but in the long run, you will get a better bang for your buck buying a new one.

Almost certainly, buy a new one. But you COULD investigate for yourself. Find out prices online for each part (like, even, generic brands, without knowing the specific part numbers needed for your laptop), add'em up, then figure out the labor involved (time times $$$per hour) and figure out that price versus the price of a new computer, and figure in your mind the compared prices versus the likely longevity...

Its better to buy a new one with high specs to satisfy yourself, because the difference is the performance, and you are sure that your computer is brand new and lessen your worry, and has a shop and manufacturer guarantee. Buying a used one always brought to frustration because of the aging component inside. I hope it helps.

Repaired laptop start chain reactions of repair and patching i.e once the laptop is open for repair, it keeps asking for repair after 3-4 months and so on.... better buy new one.

in the end, a new one would be cheaper without all of the hassle. So I would go ahead and try to find a deal on a new one.
