In one of my classes I chose the topic of faulty xbox 360s with the red ring of death as a research project. Best answer to whoever gives the most useful advice on links to significant information or the best idea on how Microsoft should solve the problem.

the problem is not an insufficient heat sink or air flow design...the problem is how the heatsink is connected to the board.

most people who send it in to microsoft for repair have to send it in over and over again b/c microsoft just throws an additional heat sink on it which doesn't solve the fundamental problem.

a bunch of nerds figured out it was this x-clamp on the board that holds the heatsink in place (and not well...there's a gap between CPU and heatsink!!! not good) and it bends when it gets warm causing a soldering connection to snap which effectively kills the system.

you can fix the design flaw yourself with just a couple screws and washers, but it will void the warranty to open your 360. it's a good gamble though as this is the most likely culprit so if you do it, you probably won't ever need your fancy new 3 year warranty.

some guys in germany made little kits with the right size/type of screws and washers (the screw size is VERY specific and not found in hardware stores, also it's best to youse a certain type of steel that is also not sold in hardware stores)....they throw in everything you need including detailed instructions for 15$...a lot for a couple screws and washers, but it's worth it if you don't want to hunt down all the right screws or don't want to drill a larger hole in your board for standard screws to fit.

I placed a link to the article i found. also a link to the site where the kits are sold. both are informative and both have videos of how to fix it...takes a couple minutes. anyone whose ever messed inside a PC can do it easy.

microsoft should have done a recall because acceptable hardware failure for commercial products is usually 3-5% whereas the 360 has around 30% failure rate in just a couple years, and this preventative solution is SO simple. but they won't do a recall because it would hurt consumer confidence in the product even more so than news of all the failures.

additionally...some other responder to your question stated they are altering the CPU to make it more heat efficient. actually they are moving to the smaller processor because it's cheaper...there are more processors per sheet when manufactured, so it's cheaper...same process/time but with more product. though it is true that the 65nm processors are more heat efficient than the ones they're replacing (and they have NOT replaced them...the new 65nm processors are NOT in the elite or the other new 360's with HDMI). wikipedia is a good place to start research as one said...pretty much everything they claim is documented and the sources are listed, so you can go directly to the source meaning a more extensive list of cited sources which always makes teachers happy...makes em think you did way more research than you actually did b/c so many sources are on one wikipedia page.

Well, for starters they extended the warranty on all 360s to 3 years for this problem.

Most of what I have heard is that the problem is generally due to MS not using good enough heat sinks on the processors. They are just now starting to produce new 360s that use new hardware to fix this problem.

I fix them in the SoCal area if anyone is interested. The warranty is void on any box that has been opened, so the only option is a repair shop or fix-it guy like me. It also takes 6 weeks to get it back if you choose to send it to them. I can do it in one hour.

I know it's 'wiki' but it's a reasonable place to start ( and has a few other links at the bottom.)
