I'm thinking of buying a wireless router when I get set up in my new apartment, but I don't know what the minimum internet connection speed has to be in order for it to work. Would 256Kbps be enough? Do I need a higher speed?

It doesn't matter what speed your getting from your ISP, your router will run on any speed that is provisioned for you. But keep in mind that the more people are using the internet through that router the slower the internet connection is going to be. Now.. since you have built a local network, there are going to be concerns on your end, your LAN speed is based on the hardware you have, usually at 10 mbps to 100 mbps that how your LAN transmits data from end to end. Since you now added another service - internet, that will be shared on your LAN, the more users slower connection, now you have to consider how many people are going to use the shared internet connection and for what they are going to use it, for emails and browsing having 4 users 256kbps is enough, but for heavy online gaming go for 1.5mbps or higher, since games and bandwidth hungry monsters.

Here's a quick example:
I have FiOS and I get 10Mbps (Mega BITS per second) download max. This averages to about 1250KBps ( KiloBYTES a second)
A 802.11g routers can transmit/receive up to 54Mbps (Mega BITS per second).
So that all being said your internet speed can't communicate data to you as fast as you can communicate to someone else using your router (two machines on the same router). So you are never using the full capacity of your wireless router when you are downloading things from the internet.

The speeds at which your wireless router communicates with your computers' wireless networking cards is not related to the speed of your internet connection.

if youre needing something inexpensive, you can visit att.com/internet and get the dsl basic package for $10/mo which is 384-768 kbps, recommended for basic internet usage like checking email and web surfing.if youre doing larger downloads like songs or doing online gaming you'll want to get a faster speed, like the dsl express package, $19.99/mo 1.5 mbps (faster pkgs also avail.) with any package you can get a dsl modem that has a built in wireless router & business grade firewall for $79.99 with a $49.99 mail in rebate (total cost $30) + $12.95 s&h
so if you have more questions you can call 1877uaskatt
but the $10/mo package is an online offer only so you have to go to www.att.com/internet to order it. if you decide to go with att, use referral code mp4341

Basic DSL will work, but I'd spend the extra few bucks for something in the 1 Mbps range. Upload speeds are always a little clunky on DSL, but that's the nature of the beast.

Since a wireless router only runs as 54 mbps (which is slower then your 256), you would be able to run it on that connection.

There really is no minimum speed. You should be plenty fine.
