A correction to a previous person's answer -- William Peter Blatty wrote the Exorcist, not Jaws. Jaws was written by Peter Benchley.
On the whole, I think books are generally better as books than the movie adaptations, but 2 great movies borne from "just" OK Stephen King novellas come to mind as : Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me

Jaws is an exception. Occasionally there are exceptions. Most books are better than the Movies or shows. Such as
Murder She Wrote.. the books were better than her tv stories.
There was one Movie.. I don't remember the title but it was a who done it. the murder took place in the Library. This was one that didn't show the murder in the start.. the movie Jessica Fletcher as though she was murdered.. but that didn't end the movie I'm not telling the end in case you never saw it! If you paid attention you'd really know whether it was really Jessica Fletcher or someone that looked like her! There was a surprise ending! The book: IT CAME TOO SOON! by Angela Landsbury & her daughter! the book was much better more detail. I think most cases books are better than movies if you're into the details and why's but if you like action better you might prefer the movie better. It's a matter of taste and opinion!

I would disagree that the movie Jaws was better than the book. I thought the book was better.
I believe the Lord of the Rings movies were better.
Every Stephen King novel was better than the movie. Hopefully one day someone will make a good movie based on his work.
"We Were Soldiers Once" - the movie was better than the book.

Harry Potter - all books have been better than the movies, except I found it easier to visualize things by watching the movies
Seabiscuit - book was better, but I was surprised at how good the movie was
1408 - it was a short story, and it was so much better than the movie
Actually, I think pretty much every book-to-movie that I've seen, I've felt the book was better than the movie. Some of them though (Jurassic Park, for one) were more enjoyable once I saw the movie because it helped me better visualize the scenes.

I don't think I've seen a movie that was even close to being as good as the book, with the possible exception of Lord of the Rings. The book was really good, and I also loved the movies. Usually seeing a movie after reading a book makes me mad, because they leave things out and change things. I usually like the authors ideas better, and think movies should follow books closer.

Movie better than book:
Forest Gump (I hated the book, loved the movie)
Ella Enchanted (although the book was good but a different story than the movie)
All of the other books that I have read (Harry Potter, Crighton, and more) have been better as books eventhough the movies were good.

William Peter Blatty wrote Jaws and the book was way better than the movie.
The Shining by Stephen King. Here I think the movie might have been visually better than the book only because of Jack Nicholsons protrayal of Jack. His character was nuts.

There was just another question like this up here and I knew there was one I was forgetting, but it was too late to add it.
I think Interview with the Vampire was way better in the movie format. I read the book first and did not like it, but was pleasantly surprised by the film.
Other movies I think were better than the books are Ringu and Wuthering Heights with Lawrence Olivier.
