I was watching how its made, the steel episode, and i was wondering... How long would it take? and the pain... wouldn't the extreme heat overload the part of your brain that feels pain, causing you to pass out?

It's hard to predict whether the person would go into shock or not quick enough. In old *and cruel* times people were boiled alive and I don't think it took a few seconds. What makes it worse with steel that you'll really float on the surface (because the density is approximately 8 times that of human body) so it's equivalent to lying on the surface of a red-hot stove. Don't try that at home.

A melting furnace reaches temps of 3000 degrees F. It would take about .012 seconds to remove all traces of skin at which point there would be a huge explosion due to the water in your bod reaching evaporations levels almost instantly. So it may be painful for about a thousandth of a second and then all nerve receptors would melt. It will be more painful for your coworkers who just had molten metal explode into the air and land on them.

Probably, the steam cooking out of
your tissues might insulate you from the
heat of the steel long enough for you to
fully appreciate the experience.

I think that one would instantaneously feel the pain and go into shock. The extreme heat factor would be irrelevant. You'd be TOAST by that point.

You would probably feel pain in the first few seconds but you would go into shock, then you would feel either cold or nothing at all.
