Yes, that would do it. But I don't think it would last very long. Most of the law abiding gun owners would not shoot at law enforcment or military and vice-versa. It would most likely be a staring contest.

It is possible for congress to ban handguns, and we can only hope a partisan supreme court doesn't uphold it. A Liberal congress can pass a bill that bans a specific handgun, and the American people think, "oh, they only mean that one gun the gangs use to kill police... that's ok". And then, they do another and another, and a Liberal President appoints liberal judges, and they systematically approve these obvious unconstitutional laws. The next step is bondage and chains, figuratively speaking.

Want to know what it feels like to live in a communist country, try having a discussion with a liberal. They will shout you down, call you names, declare you mentally disabled, and finally beat on you until you agree with them. The open minded wisdom of the left is neither open minded or wise.

edit// Texas has a "right to carry" permit which is for concealed weapons. Texans don't understand why New Yorkers put up with being forced to disarm. The fact that most people seem to think it will never happen, proves they do not understand why the libs are so power hungry.

The above answers stating that it won't ever happen must have been typed while drunk. Why the hell wouldn't our fascist government take a stab at that? They did away with our habias corpus didn't they, the right to a fair trial has been THE ONE biggest thing since before this country was broken away from england hundreds of years ago. We are in fact heading for a revolution, and indeed it's all a waiting game for what will spark it. Day by day americans are waking up from their brainwashed slumber that the corporate media has put them in and they're realizing our government don't give a damn what flag flies in front of the white house, as long as they're making the almighty dollar.

It would probably result in a revolution of some sort, I don't know whether it would be an armed revolt or not. I think it would be extremely difficult to enforce a ban so I don't think it is likely to happen.
For mmmm0987...you said it is a proven fact...cite your source please and let us see that fact too. Everything I have ever read, that was unbiased, indicates that violent crimes go up after handguns are banned.

I will say this,if handguns are banned this country is doomed because every illegal person will have one and the innocent people will be at their mercy.I work with criminals every day and I know what they think.Yes there will be a big uproar if the government trys to take them, the civil war will rise again, brother against brother, father against son, read the bible it says it will come to this. You Clinton lovers are asking for trouble, and you are about to get it.The government has taken a lot away from us these past few years, and as long as we stand with our hands in our pockets they will continue to do so.Some people need to get off the porch and see what is going on in their streets before it's to late.Look at the big picture,How most big companys are selling out to foriegn countrys, have you been in a convience store lately? How about a hotel?Who do you see?Your house is next!

Handguns are already banned in most big cities in this country right now and some states.
For example; get caught carrying a pistol in the city of NY or even in your vehicle.
Out in the suburbs you must jump thru hoops to get a carry permit!
There are a few places in this country where you can carry a handgun, but not many.
We lost that war years ago.
And it has really helped with crime? NOT
But don't worry you can always buy one off of a crook!

Yes, but I don't they will ever be banned. I believe that the federal government, depending on who is elected in 2008, will target the ammunition rather than the firearms themselves. They will most likely tax the ammunition to the point that virtually no honest citizens will be able to afford it. While handguns would not technically be banned, this would accomplish the same goal for the government - disarming the people.

Handguns can never be banned in this country. That cat is already out of the bag and can't be put back in. The best way to control gun violence in this country would be to ban handgun ammunition except for police departments, etc. We could still defend ourselves with rifles, etc. There is no need to revolt over handguns. What we should revolt over is the loss of civil rights since 9/11. (Now feds, you don't need to put me on a list. I'm not actively advocating revolt.)

No, if the feds just ban handguns, people will still be able to own hunting rifles and things.
And it's pretty easy for people to get handguns illegally, especially in big cities.

Banning is extreme and difficult to implement, but a better option is licencing with strict conditions applied. It is a proven fact that countries with such strict regulations on owning handguns/firearms have much lower incidences of general crimes/hate crimes.
