I think this all comes down to personal beliefs. Although I am not an atheist, I do not believe that they are "deceiving" themselves. I think their beliefs and convictions are as strong as yours. I guess the most important thing is that God does not take away our free will. He gives us the option to believe whatever we choose. Maybe we should all take a page from him and respect each others' feelings and beliefs.

really, the Bible is based on HISTORY? I don't think so, the bible and the whole Christian faith has been altered so many times based on people's opinions of what the people should believe, not what really happened.
Did you know, for instance, that Christians originally believed in REINCARNATION but the concept was striked from the books later by a council that decided it wasnt good for the people. They felt that if people knew they had more lives to live that it would reduce the power of the church. Christianity is based solely on politics, it is obvious in so many ways.
And, back to the bible... in the Jewish old testament, nothing is said about Mary being a Virgin and there are many remarkable differences between that version and the Christian bible. Since the Jewish texts came first, wouldn't those be based more on history than the Christian ones? They clearly rewrote history to include their own ideas.
Also, dont ever forget that the bible was written by PEOPLE, not by GOD. People, just like you and me, that make mistakes and make things up.
I am not trying to be disrespectful, I just hate it when people that put all their faith in the bible never question it or actually study it and try to throw it in everyone else's faces.
ps: rock on, katiana, i love your response

Why do so many Christians deceive themselves that they somehow have the one and only word of God written in their bible? Why do they deceive themselves into thinking that they are the true chosen ones? Why do they deceive themselves into to ignoring the fact that the bible was originally written as a political text based in the very convienent new religion of the time?
After all - the scripture was translated from ancient Hebrew and only certain books, taken from oral tradition rather than one writer who claimed to be tapped into the word of God, were included by the group of scholars and politicians who fashioned the first bible.

I follow most of the Christian guidelines just by coincidence, except for the whole "believe in God" bit, but I guess if there were a Judgment I'd still be in trouble. However, I don't believe. There's no reason for me to do so.
As for what is written, it is also written "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" and "Religion is the opiate of the masses." Not everything that is written is necessarily valid; if it were so, the world would contradict itself.

Well, some people think that the greatest judge of a person is that person. Having a conscience in themselves is enough. For example, someone steals something, gets away with it, never gets caught. But their conscience makes them feel bad, so the end up returning the item, just so that they don't feel bad inside anymore. This scenario (for some people) has nothing to do with God. Some people think that highly religious people give up their accountability to God, so when they do something bad, they think: God will forgive me. Well, if there was no God, then what? It's a matter of personal opinion, everyone has different beliefs.

First - This belongs in R&S (Religion & Spirituality).
Second - Sociology is a realistic study of society.
Religion is an idealogy/theology based on mythology.
Third - You being religious (seemingly christian), should know that any argument you make using a biblical verse should be in context.
The verse which you loosely used to judge atheists, was actually directed towards the pharisees and religious folks themselves, by Jesus.
From a christian perspective, this verse implies that those possessing biblical knowledge (or in that time, the instruction of Mosaic Law) and a "relationship with god" are accountable to him, and required to be an example of "light" to the world, which is supposedly lost and blind, therefore the world will not be judged as harshly as the church, for obtaining the responsibility of such knowledge.
Luke 12:48
"But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required."
Another example of how christians shouldn't judge the world, but only within the church:
1 Corinthians 5:11-13
"But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a BROTHER but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."
Apparently, Paul had quite a difficult time making up his mind, since he also states in 1 Corinthians 6:2-3
"Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts?
Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?"
Which (lastly), leads to the inaccuracy of the bible, a book full of contradictions, compiled of re-written and mistranslated views and myths (read into emperor Constantine and the Council of Nicaea), that are found to have originally stemmed from the Sumerians.
Edit: Thanks for the input and your opinion (rather than any facts, as there is no evidence) that the bible is based on history. But you did not emphasize on the topic at hand, which you intitiated with your question...and I wonder why.
Perhaps some research would come in handy, as to the validity of the bible, to organize and assess your arguments effectively. Until then, all you have to offer are beliefs and faith, not facts.
And as the bible says in Hebrews 11:1
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

Do you really think that there is a god? Heaven? Judgment? Does it really make sense? Take a step back and look at what you believe. If you had not been brought up believing what you do then would you think that a religion was a little off if they ritualistically ate the flesh and drank the blood of their god? Keep searching yourself and what you believe. Also, look into why you believe things. Is it because someone told you so? You read it (someone told you so through writing)? Are you that gullible? Do you always tend to believe what you are told with out looking at the facts and applying some common sense?

Isn't it always interesting that Christian's or people that proclaim themselves to be Christian's have a need to tell others how to live their lives. You should worry more about what is happening in your convoluted universe and less about what I am doing in mine.
Read Katiana's answer carefully. If you do not understand where your beliefs came from how do you know what your believe to be actually true

I'm not deceiving myself.
I respect your right to deceive yourself.
Love your quote as nothing has been given to me, I have had to work my butt off for the very little I have.
Why do you feel a need to label people who don't agree with you? Since I obviously won't be there at your judgement day, why would you give two flips about mine?

First of all, you're writing this in the wrong section. This is Sociology, not religion.
Second, it has been my experience that more "misdeads" are committed by so-called righteous, God-fearing people, usually in the name of their "God" than educated people who don't happen to believe in God and just go about their days minding their own freegin' business.
That is the hypocracy of religion that I see has rubbed itself onto you as well.
