Soviet limited contingent in Afghanistan never exceeded 100000. Too small to suppress them to dust.
US Army needs at least 600000 to control Iraq.

I don't know how ANY of us can really know if the surge/escallation of this conflict is working. None of us are on the front lines, and none of have lost 4 generations of family in a single night of bombing. Just because we are killing more citizens does nto mean its working.

We'll not know the effect of this escalation until after US forces are reduced, and Iraqi forces take over. Gorilla forces rarely confront an enemy force head-on, stepping instead away from "surges" to wait for a better day to fight.

It's not likely Iraqi troops will fare very well, just as when South Vietnamese troops attempted to take over the fighting from US "advisors" in the Vietnam War. A third of Iraq or more is against the government and religiously aligned with Iran, another third desires independence and unification with Kurds in Turkey. If you think these factions can suddenly work together when we pull out you'd better think again.

Dam't straight. We should have escalated this a long time ago. Now is the deciding time in the battle for Iraq and the US military deserves to have the best chance to finish the job.

Who cares what it's called? Why argue about semantics? The fact of the matter is that it has WORKED. Even CBS and the dems have had to admit that it has WORKED.
