Ideally, great homage, but it never seems to work out that way. I enjoy a good cover, but if you're going to do it, do it right. Make sure you can piece together an entire record of good performances and interesting, applicable performers. I always, innevitably end up liking one or two songs and wishing the rest of the songs hadn't been covered in the first place.

Now, a worn-out novelty.

The only tribute album I have heard and enjoyed is:

Legacy: A Tribute To Fleetwood Mac's Rumours

It was arranged by Mick Fleetwood, which may explain why it was better than most.

Out of the eleven tracks, I like 9 / 10 of them.

The only real let-down was The Cranberries cover of 'Go Your Own Way'. They made it sound so bland!

It really depends on the artists they choose and the effort they put into the covers. Sometimes it's just individual covers that stick out so much it can make the whole effort worth it. Madman Across the Water by Bruce Hornsby on the Two Rooms Elton John tribute made the whole not-very-good-album worth it.

I have to agree with Prof - I can't listen, start-to-finish, to any tribute album I own. I think it's a great idea on paper, but it always ends up falling short in the execution. Sometimes I think the label ends up settling on some tracks just to fill it up and get it on the shelves.

Even if the tribute is directed to a band I dearly love, this concept has become painfully overdone and old. Put me down for worn-out novelty.

I've never been a fan of the tributes. If I want to hear a song/band....I want to hear the original.

Although, I do find MiniKiss highly entertaining while simultaneously creepy as Hell.

Well, I believe you would have to be a musician to truly understand why these things are done, but personally my thoughts are their great, they show respect for an artist from an artist. some are great..some good..and then some just terrible, but hey its the thought that counts. hope this gives you new thoughts to bang around your head about the subject! Eh... usually at least half of the covers suck.
