Yes, they are now eligible for the AP poll. Now, whether a team from 1AA will ever be ranked remains to be seen. Most AP writers determine their rankings on the quality of an opponent, and 1AA schools don't play enough 1A schools to get noticed. Like Appalachian State opened the season with Michigan, they have no other 1A school on their schedule this year. Even if they remain undefeated, there is no way they will get reanked. However, if more 1AA schools start scheduling more 1A schools and more of them get these big upsets, it's not out of the question for them to maybe get ranked.

They may allow it but what would it really mean? Sure Appl. State beat Michigan but they have no other Div 1 on their schedule for the remainder of the year so how can you compare? And Michigan dropped out of the Top 25 so where do you rank Appl. State? At 25 minus 1?

It's actually the AP that is allowing it. They own the poll so it's their call. And I do believe the change is effective immediately.

i don't see how they could, b/c polls are for national championship purposes. Since 1-AA team can't play in championship it would mess polls up.
