I've got the awesome answer. Take some cottonballs and put some vanilla abstract in them. Make sure you use several cottonballs.
The way you do it is:
you take the cottonball and put it to the top of the bottle and put the bottle upside down and back upright. Do several of these.
Tell me what you think.
By the way, this is 10 points. Thank you.

Most likely shoes. Empty closet, paint all walls & shelving. There is even a paint additive sold which adds scent to paint and last for 6 months, you may want to try that. Rewash clothing or at least hang outdoors for a full day, you can also put it in a dryer with some dryer sheets, just let it air fluff a full cycle. Do not put shoes or dirty clothes hamper in closet, after several weeks, see if smell has returned. If it has, i would make a test hole in the wall to see if there is bad odor in between the walls. Is there any piping in the wall? Is the closet adjacent to the bathroom or kitchen? What is upstairs or downstairs from the closet? There are many possibilities, you will have to take it one step at a time, from most obvious (shoes) and easiest (remove items, see if it stinks when empty) to most drastic (tearing out walls).

Depending if the closet floor is made of ...
If in the case it is wooden: 2 parts pine sol, 1 part vinegar, 1 part oxy clean. Mix with one gal of warm water. Scrub floor for 6 minutes and then let air with a fan (blow towards entrance).
If in the case it is carpet: Sprinkle with carpet freshener and let stand for 30 minutes (Pine or Potpourri variances are strongest in odour eliminators). Vacuum up after allotted time and then spray Oust (pine aerosol). Leave a few odour eaters in the closet in each corner.
In the case of linoleum: Same as #1 but use bleach instead of vinegar.

Several possibilities.
For starters, leave the door open a bit if you can.
Place a couple of boxes of baking soda in corners of the closet.
Get some pieces of cedar and place them around in your closet (you can get them in Lowes or Home Depot or any closet store).
Use some Fabreeze or Lysol in there.

Buy a drawer liner packet from the Dollar Store. Hang it up in the closet for a fresher fragrance.

I agree that sweaty shoes can be the worst thing. But check pockets especially of coats. One of my kids hid an egg-cheese wrap in his coat pocket and then put it in the closet because he didn't want to eat it. That was a stinky thing until we found it.

Box of baking soda on the shelf. Also on the carpet if its casrpeted. Then vacuum it up. Sweaty shoes closed up is the worst enemy of closed closets.

take all the clothes out, dust/vacuum everything, shampoo any carpetting, dry thoroughly, put clothes back in ... vacuum and air-out regularly ... baking soda or stick-ups are optional - I prefer cedar disks on a few hangers ...
