i'm a server at a pretty upscale country club and have worked there for about 2 and half years now. but i'm confused on what the purpose of baseplates/chargers are and who started it. there really isnt a purpose and most guests think that they eat off of it (which is gross since we clean them with windex).

I can't tell you who started it, but my only guess is that's it for presentation and to not soil the tablecloth. I can empathize with you, people can be stupid and messy. Like putting their bread on the charger instead of the bread plate, spilling soup everywhere, crumbs everywhere, no wonder you have to clean them so often! You'd think at an upscale country club that they'd have an idea that the charger is just decorative, not a trough for their spillage. I understand that accidents happen, but some people just have no clue. I've even seen people at upscale functions with a buffet take the charger to the buffet at nice weddings!

Began in Victorian England as a place setting for formal dinners. Today chargers are merely a decorative addition.
