Are you changing the filter as well? If not you should. What year is the car?

It's best to look in the owners manual under "capacities" to get a better idea. Most cars hold between 4 and 5 quarts with a filter change. I discovered that most cars will hold an additional 1/2 quart more than the owners manual suggests with a filter change especially in bigger engines like a V-6 or V-8.

There is roughly 1/2 quart of oil in circulation at all times when the motor is running. And, if you ever rebuild an engine and prime it (with oil) the first time you discover that there's like 1/2 quart that never leaves the engine as it is sticky and there are lots of places for it to hide inside the motor.

Good Luck!
